Program Speaker:     Dr. Jim Carlo, IEEE Fellow, Former Chair of IEEE 802

 

Program Summary:  The IEEE 802 standards committee will be meeting this year in Dallas from 13-Nov to 17-Nov. This talk will describe the details of events at an IEEE 802 meeting, how to participate effectively, how to register, what to expect.  The organization of the IEEE 802 standards committee will be described. Specific areas of new technology in development for LANs and WANs will be detailed to enable attendees to determine which meetings of IEEE 802 they would like to attend.  

 

Jim is a consultant (President of J.Carlo Consulting LLC) and is currently consulting for Huawei Technologies (in China) to enable Huawei to become more effective in IEEE Standards Work.  Jim was formerly the President of IEEE Standards and the former chair of IEEE 802, and has been active in worldwide standards developments, including ISO/IEC and the ITU being chair of ISO/IEC JTC1/SC6 for three years. Jim graduated from MIT with a Ph.D. in 1973, and then worked for Texas Instruments for 28 years as a systems engineer focusing on networking standards.  While at TI, he was a TI Fellow and concentrated on networking design and the testing of various protocols. He is co-author of the book, Understanding Token Ring Standards and Protocols, and was involved with Token Ring Standards development serving as chair and vice-chair of IEEE 802.5.  He has given multiple seminars on LANs and has authored introductions for the ASCII book series in Japan.  While at TI for 28 years, Jim also worked on Bubble Memories, CCD imagers (for the Space Telescope), and DLP light modulation technology.  Jim has published over 35 papers and holds seven patents.
