Abstract:

There is an emerging market for picoprojectors that can be embedded into mobile phones or other small portable devices. A compelling solution for this new market space has been developed using DLP® technology. The DLP® reference design, when including the optical engine and all electronics, is extremely small in total volume and very thin so that a thin projector-phone can be developed. Electrical power for the projector electronics and light source is low enough for use in a cell phone. This clearly represents a whole new class of projector product. To achieve the small size and low power, a complete rethinking of the electronics, DMD, light source, and optics has been required when compared to traditional front projectors.

An overview of technologies, including both DLP and non-DLP, that are competing for this picoprojector space will be presented and a demo of a phone-sized projector will be shown that is based on the DLP® solution. (Note: Technical details of the DLP® picoprojector solution cannot yet be shared since production projector-phones are not yet on the market.)

Biography:

Dan Morgan started to work at TI in 1982 after graduating from Ohio University with a degree in electrical engineering. Since joining DLP® Products in 1993 he has worked in the Front Projection group as a systems and electronics engineer. He has often worked on the next generation of system and ASIC development. Dan has been the systems engineer for the picoprojector reference design from its conception at TI. Dan holds the title of Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff at Texas Instruments
